March 12, 2015

My sisters and brothers in Christ:

We worship as usual this weekend: At our convenient community Holy Eucharist service on Saturday (March 14) at 5 p.m. andSunday morning at 8 and 10. Among other things, we’ll hear and ponder the most famous verse in the New Testament.

Tonight (Thursday, March 12th) we’ll watch and ponder “The Mission,” the 1986 film set in 18th century South America starring Robert De Niro as a mercenary and slaver trader and Jeremy Irons as a Jesuit missionary. If you get this in time, please join us. We’ll be in the St. John’s School library (under the St. John Chrysostom Chapel) starting at 6 p.m. Refreshments will be provided. This Sunday, March 15 in the Bishop’s Room, Linda Allport will lead a conversation about this stunning film, the latest installment of our “Lenten Search for God at the Movies.” If you can’t make our screening tonight, try to watch the movie before Sunday’s class (but you don’t have to have seen it to attend).

The series concludes next week with Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 epic, “2001: A Space Odyssey” (showing on Thursday, March 19 at 6 p.m. in the Bishop’s Room, discussion led by Andy Guilford on Sunday, March 22 at 9 a.m., also in the Bishop’s Room).

Both this Sunday and next, Sunday School-age students are invited to their own search for God at the movies during the 9 a.m. hour, when we’ll have something special for them to watch in the nursery during our 9 a.m. movie discussions.

Our monthly food distribution ministry takes place next Thursday, March 19 from noon to 5 p.m. at The Bridge Church, 30162 Tomas Ave. in Rancho Santa Margarita. If you can help all day or just for an hour or two, please either show up or, if you can, let ministry leader Roger Bradshaw know you’re coming by writing him at parisbradshaws@me.com or calling at 949-505-4663. And please don’t forget to bring your food gifts to church this weekend. I’ve got my usual bag of TJ’s mac and cheese!

Also this week: Please give us your Easter flower instructions…buy See’s candy after church on Sunday…sign up for some Lenten Quiet Time next Saturday, March 21 (only if you’re doing yoga; no signups needed for the other activities) and the Maundy Thursday all-night prayer vigil April 2-3…and come, and bring a friend, to our caregivers’ support group on Wednesday, March 18 at 7 p.m. in the Bishop’s Room (write or call co-leader DJ Gomer at 949-351-1399 for more information).

Yours in Christ’s love,

Fr. John

P.S. to the men of the church: How do you sign up, if you haven’t already, to hear Mother Martha’s breakfast talk this Saturday, March 14 at 8 a.m. in the multipurpose room? Just reply to this e-mail, and I’ll let the guys know!
