October 24, 2015
My sisters and brothers in Christ:
We worship as usual this weekend: Our convenient community Holy Eucharist service today (Saturday, Oct. 24) at 5 p.m. and on the 22nd Sunday after Pentecost at 8 and 10 a.m., when we’ll hear the story of a man named Bartimaeus who meets Jesus in Jericho and says he wants to see again.
When he does, Jesus tells him his faith has made him well. We should all have such faith — and in the early church, they did. If you want to learn how, we’ll see you during the 9 a.m. Christian formation hour, when Mo. Martha will continue our conversation about The Illumined Heart: Capture The Vibrant Faith Of Ancient Christians by Frederica Mathewes-Green. Don’t worry if you haven’t read the book yet. Mo. Martha will give us the highlights.
After the second service on Sunday, your parish leaders invite all the people of God to the first of two meetings about our 2016 stewardship campaign. (The second is next Sunday, Nov. 1, also around 11:30 a.m.) We’ll review our busy year at St. John’s, talk about parish finances, take your questions, get your ideas, describe our hopes for 2016, and give you your pledge card. In the verse that our Bishop’s Warden, Gregg Stempson, chose for our campaign, St. Paul writes, “We [all] have different gifts.” Please give the church the gift of your presence at one of these two meetings. Each will last about 45 minutes and include a light lunch.
If you’re reading this on Saturday morning, it’s not too late to make plans to attend the premiere of “Galaxy Buck: Mission to Sector 9,” a new space trilogy starring Buck Denver and friends from the creator of “What’s in the Bible?” and “Veggie Tales,” Phil Vischer. It’s today at 1:30 p.m. in the Cardinal Gym. Parent must accompany their children. Kids should bring a blanket and pillow. We’ll provide goodies. If you haven’t signed up, no worries. Just come!
Finally, on All Saints Sunday next weekend, we will pray for the great cloud of St. John’s witnesses. By this Tuesday, Oct. 27, please email Cindy at email@example.com with the names of family members and friends you would like us to include. Give rest, O Christ, to your servants with your saints, where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but live everlasting.
Yours in Christ’s love,
