The church calls the three days beginning tomorrow
Allhallowtide: All Hallows Eve, the Feast of All Saints, and All Souls’ Day. It’s a triduum of remembrance of all who have died — martyrs and other great men and women of the faith, family and friends we have loved and temporarily lost, and those who are unknown to us but eternally embraced by our Creator. The candy and costumes,
ofrenda in the St. John’s columbarium commemorating
El Dia de Los Muertos, and roll of St. John’s saints in our bulletin all add up to an autumnal celebration of Resurrection and the abundance of God’s love in Christ.St. John’s will leave All Hallows Eve to the trick-or-treaters.
There will be no service on Saturday. On All Saints Sunday, we’ll worship at 8 and 10 a.m. We don’t want you to be trick-or-treated into coming to church an hour early, though, so after you’ve stowed what’s left of the peanut butter cups and blown out the candles in your jack-o’-lanterns,
be sure to set your clocks back an hour.In the spirit of All Souls, during the 9 a.m. Christian formation hour on Sunday in the Bishop’s Room, join our distinguished former associate vicar, Pastor Lisa Rotchford, for the first installment of her three-week class,
“The Soul: Scripture, Tradition, And Reason.” All are welcome; and please bring your Bible! All the saints in training are invited to
our second conversation about our 2016 stewardship drive this Sunday, Nov. 1 at about 11:30 a.m. in the multipurpose room. After a colorful review of the last year at St. John’s, your parish leaders will summarize church finances, ask for your questions and ideas, detail their dreams for the year to come, and distribute pledge cards. The meeting, which will last about 45 minutes, will include a light lunch. Our theme this year is
gifts in faith.
We ask all St. John’s members to give us the gift of their presence.
And on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m., it’s finally time for saints and suds! Volunteers from St. John’s and our sister church in Laguna Hills, St. George’s, will meet up at Sparklean Laundromat, 23532 El Toro Rd. (between Cornelius Dr. and Raymond Way) in Lake Forest for the inaugural installment of our newest outreach ministry, Laundry Love Lake Forest. The flier we’re distributing to our clients is attached. We’ll help them do their laundry and use the time during washer and drier cycles to do the real work of the ministry: The fellowship of the saints.
Mo. Martha has devoted long hours to getting Laundry Love Lake Forest off the ground. If you’d like more information, or if you want to join us Wednesday but aren’t yet on her mailing list, please drop her a line at mjohns@stjohns-es.org. See you at Laundry Love!
Yours in Christ’s love,
Fr. John
