by the Rev. Christopher Potter, Vicar

There are many things to celebrate and opportunities to express gratitude in our future.

[A little aside: Did you know that the greatest defense against depression and feelings of shame is making gratitude a regular practice? Kinda wow, wouldn’t you agree?]

What a wonderful picnic we had on Sunday! It was pure joy to see the return of many familiar faces, and the arrival of some new ones as well. It feels more and more like a family that is returning to a familiar and regular life. I am so thankful to the many of you who shopped, brought food, set up the meal, cooked, and cleaned. You really know how to throw a party!

There are quite a few people coming back, now, to Sunday morning worship. If you receive this email and are waiting for an invitation or signal to come home, THIS IS IT! Please join us again – for worship, for the choir, for coffee and donuts…

We are restarting the 8 a.m. Sunday service this weekend. As a reminder, it is a shorter service with no music and a brief sermon. I believe we will finish these services around 8:40 a.m.

Also this Sunday we welcome the return of the Adult Forum, known as “Becoming Beloved Community.” This gathering of curious, searching, wondering people begins at 9 a.m. in the Learning Commons (perhaps a bit earlier in the near future), and is hosted by Rick Anderson, Tom Simpson, and me. This week: introductions and discussion about the future. In the near future, some discussions on what it means to be an Episcopalian, how to stay in dialogue when we disagree, how to talk about uncomfortable topics.

On Saturday, October 1, we come together celebrating “A Fistful of Spaghetti.” After the Saturday 5 p.m. service, we will gather in the Cardinal Gym for dinner, fun, fundraising, and likely some tomfoolery. Here’s how to sign up and get tickets. If you need, we have some tickets that were gifted, so everybody can join in!

The next morning, Sunday October 2, we will have the honor of saying, “thank you” to Rev. Karen. As she retires (hah!) we wish to let her know of our extreme gratitude for her loving service to St. John’s and to other parishes in her loving wake. As always, we will celebrate with some food and fun after the 10 a.m. Eucharist.

The Bishop’s Committee is assembling on Wednesday, September 21 for prayer at 5:40 p.m. and meeting at 6 p.m.

It is an honor to be working with all of you doing the work of the Gospel. We are making a difference. May we find strength to do more.
