This Sunday, November 19, 2023, will be our Pledge In-Gathering Celebration. We invite all of you to fill out those pledge cards and return them this Sunday. Our lives are rooted in the abundance of grace, mercy, and love given by our God and at this time we want to make our pledge in support of our St John’s ministry. There are no coincidences in God’s kingdom, but God has a sense of humor. The Gospel lesson for this Sunday is the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30). What it is a talent? It is not a coin like a denarius (equivalent to a day’s wage for a laborer). Instead, a talent is a measure of weight, roughly seventy-five pounds, which would be 6,000 denarii, enough to live on for 20 years. The servants in our parable have been entrusted with a vast fortune! This lesson is perfect for in-gathering of pledges. The Parable of the Talents is not directly about stewardship. It is in the context of Jesus’ Olivet discourse about signs of the end. Nevertheless, it certainly encourages to think about what we will do with the “talents” and abilities entrusted to us. To those who risk for God, the Master says, “Well done.” As you consider your pledge of time, talent, and treasure, remember that all the grace and love of God has been poured out upon us. How will we respond?
